Mehana

Region

MEHANA ( other spellings: Mehana, Mehanna, Mehanna ) is a rural municipality in the department of Tera in Niger.

Geography

MEHANA is located in the southern Sahel and is situated on the right bank of the Niger River northwest of the regional capital Tilabéri. The neighboring municipalities are mehanas Dessa and Zinder in the east and Kokorou in the north, south and west. The municipality is divided into 15 administrative villages, a traditional village, 30 hamlets and two camps. The main town of the country church is the administrative village MEHANA.

History

1899 reached the area of MEHANA as part of the newly created circle Sinder under French military administration. 1905, the site became part of the new military territory of Niger. MEHANA was initially part of the canton Kokorou and was dissolved in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform as a separate rural municipality in the canton.

Population

At the 2001 census MEHANA had 20,884 inhabitants. For the year 2010 27.660 inhabitants were calculated. MEHANA is one of the main settlement areas of the Songhai in Niger, next to the town and the village Tilabéri Wanzerbe in the municipality of Gorouol.

Economy and infrastructure

In MEHANA is an important market, the colonial power France docked in the 1930s. Market day is Wednesday. The municipality is located in a zone is operated in the rain-fed agriculture.
