Melrose (South Australia)

Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, a mountain range in South Australia. The city lies at the foot of Mount Remarkable, 265 kilometers north of Adelaide. The first Europeans who traveled through the area was Edward John Eyre in 1840. Shortly afterwards followed settlers and established farms in the area. After the first finds of copper its degradation began in 1846. This proved not to be economically and has already been set in 1851 again. The mine was reopened to 1917 three times and then closed again.

Today, Melrose is the starting point for visitors to the Mount Remarkable National Park and a local center of local farmers.

The 1848 opened police station in Melrose was the site of the then largest police district in the world. A police officer, two riders and a tracker of the Australian aborigines were responsible for an area up to the Timor Sea.
