The Saphan Phra Phutthayotfa ( Thai: สะพาน พระพุทธ ยอด ฟ้า, even for short สะพาน พุ ท, Saphan Phut, Rama I Bridge, English:. Memorial Bridge ) is a bridge over the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. It connects the two districts ( Khet ) Phra Nakhon and Thonburi.

Technology

The Saphan Phut is a three-piece steel construction, whose central part was originally folded up to allow even larger ships transit. Each of the three parts is 78 meters long. The driveway on the Thonburi side is 130 meters long, on the Rattanakosin side 314 meters.

History

Construction of the bridge began on December 3, 1929, it was built by Dorman Long, known bridge farmers from Middlesbrough, England. On April 6, 1932 the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Chakri Dynasty, the bridge of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII ) was opened. In English usage, the bridge "Memorial Bridge" ( Bridge of Remembrance ) is called, as the official name in Thai สะพาน ปฐม บรม ราชา นุ สร ณ์ ( Saphan Pathom Borom Ratchanuson ) is what so much as a "bridge of the Royal Reminder " means. You should remember the founder of the Chakri dynasty, King Phra Phutthayotfa Chulaloke ( Rama I ).

Attractions near the bridge

  • On the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya: At the foot of the bridge, a large statue of King Phutthayotfa Chulaloke is situated in a small park, which was designed by the Italian -born sculptor Silpa Bhirasri.
  • Under the bridge every evening will be held a night market.
  • The Pak Khlong Thalad (market at the channel mouth ), a large, continuous open flower and vegetable market is located just north of the bridge.
  • Khuan - Uh- shrine, just south of the bridge - here came King Taksin, before he went to war.
