Band History

Students Reg Mombassa, Martin Plaza, Greedy Smith, Peter O'Doherty and Wayne Deslisle formed the band in 1977 in Sydney, ostensibly to get through performances free drinks. The musical result was better than expected, thus obtained Mental as Anything more and more awareness and there was a very long pub crawl.

On 16 August 1977, at night, died in the Elvis Presley, the band performed for the first time in the Cell Block Theatre ( East Sydney Tech. ) On. There followed a year-long engagement at the Unicorn Hotel in Sydney, in which a pool table as a temporary stage was used. 1978 remained the Mind While in the city, but changed for another year in the Civic Hotel.

1979 was achieved with the single The Nips Are Getting Bigger (AUS 16th place) and the album Get Wet (AUS # 19 ) for the first time of entry into the top 20 of the Australian charts. For the single it was after the publication in the UK, a position in the top 40 of the independent charts.

The extraction Come Around (AUS No. 18 ) from the 1980 album Espresso Bongo could also in the Australian charts place like ( Just Like ) Romeo and Juliet (AUS # 27 ), which, however, was not found on any album. In 1981 the platinum album Cats and Dogs. The resulting coupled- Songs If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too? (OFF position 4 ) and Too Many Times (AUS 6th place) were the first top 10 hits of the band.

1982 Mental as Anything went for the first time in the United States on tour. There the single I Did not Mean to Be Mean (AUS # 25 ), which was produced by Elvis Costello was born. With the album Creatures Of Leisure and other extractions, eg Spirit Got Lost (AUS No. 20 ) and Working for the Man (AUS No. 20 ), a cover version of Roy Orbison - Hits of 1962, it went, along with the USA, in Canada on a concert tour.

The first art exhibition with works of the band members there were in 1983 Watters Gallery, Darlinghurst ( Sydney ). Among the buyers were also Patrick White and Elton John. White was later one of Reg's work at the Art Gallery of NSW.

With Apocalypso ( Wiping The Smile Off Santa 's Face) (AUS # 37 ) published the Mental's 1984 Christmas single. The following year, the platinum album fundamentals as Anything Strong (AUS # 11 ) and Live It Up (AUS 2nd place) appeared with the singles You're So. For Live It Up, there was a APRA Award for Most Performed Work and a countdown Award for Best Single. By using the soundtrack to the film Crocodile Dundee the title in late 1986 was also popular in Europe, reaching about one and a half years after its release high in the charts in Scandinavia, Germany, England, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, where Mental as Anything by the Italian television coveted Telegatto was awarded.

The album Mouth to Mouth was released in 1987. The success of the band was limited now back to Australia, where the singles Let's Go to Paradise and He 's Just No Good for You reached the Top 20 (both 15th place). A cover version of Elvis Presley 's Love Me Tender was included on any album, but as a single available (AUS No. 34 ). In the same year, the band toured with Robert Palmer UK, Canada and Nebraska (USA).

The 1988 hit Rock & Roll Music (AUS 5th place) came from the soundtrack of Einstein Junior ( original title Young Einstein). Cyclone Raymond was the 1989 album, which should be the last time being.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Paul Keating, 1990 opened the second mental -as -Anything - art exhibition where works by all five band members were seen. Because of the success toured the exhibition on the continent.

The next studio album Liar Liar Pants on Fire was not published until 1995. Afterwards, the musicians moved to the studio to work on a new album. They played on the Mountain Rock Music Festival in Woodville and toured with Chris Isaak by Australia and New Zealand.

The LP Garage appeared in 1997. Was Time near the third art exhibition then traveled to 2002 by Australia, opened by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. 1999 left the songwriter Peter O'Doherty the band to work professionally as a painter. He later won many art awards and exhibitions organized at home and abroad. The new Mind - member was David Barraclough.

On Australia Day 2000, the band played in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. In the following years, several other national and international tours as well as several album releases, such as 2009 Tents Up.
