Mercedes-Benz M278 engine
The Mercedes -Benz M 278 engine is a series of Mercedes -Benz, and the successor to the M - 273 generation. Is an 8- cylinder engine in the V- arrangement. In contrast to the equally new six-cylinder M 276 of the cylinder bank angle was at 90 °, although the engines are closely related.
Compared to its predecessor, the motors are connected through direct fuel injection much more economical and efficient. There are also intelligent generator management and a demand-controlled engine oil pump, fully variable injection pressure of 100 to 200 bar, twin-turbocharged with air-water charge air cooling, turbocharger with wastegate valves, new cast pistons and engine electronics with Controlled Efficiency stop-start function. The power transmission takes place via the 7 - speed automatic or the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7- speed sports transmission.
The introduction of the engines has been gradual in the fall of 2010, starting with the S- class (Type 221) and CL- class (Type 216). The AMG variant is designated M 157, for the turbocharged variant or M 152 for the suction variation with cylinder deactivation.
Variants
The new eight-cylinder replace the previous 500 and 63 AMG. It will be available two levels of displacement:
M 152 EN 55
M 157 DE 55 AL
M 278 DE 46 AL red.
M 278 DE 46 AL
The M 278 is available with all-wheel drive 4MATIC again in its basic version in the S-Class and CL. Since 2011 he is also incorporated into the E-Class. The S 450 was no longer offered in the fall of 2010; if there is a power level between the new 500 and follow the new six- cylinders, is not yet known.
