European hake (Merluccius merluccius )

The hake ( Merlucciidae ) are a family in the order of the cod -like ( gadiformes ). Hake are caught as food fish.

Features

The body shape is slender, the head striking pointed. The first dorsal fin is short, while the second dorsal fin and the anal fin are long. Characteristic of the hake is the black color of its mouth and gill cavity and tongue; he is up to 1.30 m long. The body color is silvery- gray. Unlike their relatives from the cod family hake have no beard thread.

Habitats

Hake live in many parts of the Atlantic. Merluccius merluccius is mostly to be found in the South Atlantic and almost the entire Mediterranean; rare in the North Sea. Furthermore, in the South Pacific hake (Merluccius gayi ) off the coasts of South Africa (Merluccius capensis ), coast of North America (Merluccius bilinearis ) and off the coast of Argentina and Uruguay (Merluccius hubbsi ) encountered.

Nutrition

Hake are fish eaters mainly feed on herring, mackerel, sprats and sardines.
