Mervyn Alexander

Mervyn Alban Alexander ( born June 29, 1925 in Highbury, London, † August 14 2010 in Clifton Bristol, England) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Clifton.

Life

Mervyn Alexander studied theology at the Venerable English College in Rome and received on 18 July 1948, the ordination to the priesthood in the Roman Leonine College. After doctoral studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, he received his doctorate in 1951 for Doctor Theologiae. Alexander was from 1951 to 1964 deputy priest at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Clifton, Bristol. He was also a hospital chaplain at the Bristol Maternity and Homeopathic Hospital. In 1953 he became chaplain and university chaplain at the University of Bristol. In 1967 he took over as pastor the church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Weston -super- Mare.

Pope Paul VI. appointed Mervyn Alexander on March 8, 1972 Titular Bishop of Pinhel and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Clifton. The Bishop of Clifton Joseph Edward Rudderham donated to him on April 25th of that year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were George Patrick Dwyer, Archbishop of Birmingham, and John Edward Petit, Bishop of Menevia.

Took place on 20 December in 1974 by Pope Paul VI. the appointment as Bishop of Clifton.

Alexander was from 1973 to 1983 member of the Secretariat for Non - Christians (since 1988: Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue ) and is also Chairman of the Commission for non - Christians in Wales and England. From 1977 to 1983 he was deputy chairman of the Commission for the liturgy and 1976-1983 President of the Catholic Child Welfare Council. Alexander was involved especially in the ecumenical movement in Wales and England, and was from 1976 to 1980 co-chair of the Roman Catholic and Methodist Committee. In 1977, he was elected co- chairman of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1982 he became chairman of the working group for the spirituality of the papal visit of John Paul II in England and Wales. From 1982 to 1999 he was chairman of the Committee for the Arts and Architecture. 1987/1988 was Alexander President of the Diocesan Synod.

In 2001 he received for his dedication to the city of Bristol and the University of Bristol honorary doctorate of law.

On 27 February 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. He was then pastor at St. Joseph in Weston -super- Mare. Since 2008 he lived in St. Angela's Home in Clifton.
