Messe de Nostre Dame

The Messe de Nostre Dame is a Mass setting for four voices by Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300/1305-1377 ). This is in addition to the measurement of Tournai, Toulouse, Barcelona and the Sorbonne, one of the oldest polyphonic settings of the Ordinary, and the oldest known, which comes from the pen of a single, named composers.

The title of the exhibition refers to the Marian title of Our Lady, which also includes the Reims Cathedral is consecrated, of Guillaume de Machaut of action.

The composition was probably made in 1360th The formerly widespread presumption occasion of the composition is the coronation of King Charles V (19 May 1364) for been, is now considered unlikely, as Guillaume was present at the coronation as a canon of the Cathedral of Reims and they reported a performance of his fair while but did not mention a word. The fair is not delivered in a liturgical collection, but in illuminated manuscripts of compositions Guillaume.

Description of the work

The exhibition consists of six parts. In addition to the usual later Ordinariumsteilen Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei contains the Mass, as it did the older Messe de Tournai, one set to music Ite, missa est.

In the measurement cycle, two different composition techniques alternate. In the Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and Ite, missa est, the style of isorhythmical motet with a Gregorian melody as a cantus firmus prevails in Ténor. For example, in the Kyrie numerous Hoquetuspassagen in the upper voices are available. In contrast, the Gloria and the Credo without reference to the Gregorian chant are set strictly homophonic; only the Amen- circuits are designed polyphonic again because of the festive final effect.

In contrast to the other polyphonic settings of the Mass of the 14th century, which are set for three voices with soprano, tenor and bass, Guillaume de Machaut expands the set art by the addition of a countertenor from a complete four -part harmony. Is on the use of instruments, unlike Guillaume de Machaut's other compositions, nothing is known.

The performance lasts about 30-35 minutes.
