Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster

Doncaster is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire in England. Administrative center is the city of Doncaster. Other important towns in the Borough are Armthorpe, Auckley, Bessacarr, Conisborough, Edlington, Mexborough and Stainforth.

The reorganization of the limits and the capabilities of local authorities led in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough. Were fused while the County Borough of Doncaster, the Urban Districts Adwick le Street, Bentley with Arksey, Conisborough, Mexborough and Tickhill, and the Rural Districts Doncaster and Thorne. These authorities previously belonged to the county of West Riding of Yorkshire. Added by Nottinghamshire individual villages from the Rural Districts East Retford and Worksop.

1986 Doncaster was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the overall management of South Yorkshire. Doncaster was for ceremonial purposes part of South Yorkshire, as well as for individual higher-level tasks such as police, fire and public transport.

Policy

The Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster is represented by three MPs in the House, which currently belong to any of the Labour Party. The constituency of Doncaster Central represents Rosie Winterton, the constituency of Doncaster North represents Ed Miliband and the constituency of Don Valley Caroline Flint represents.

At a European level Doncaster is part of the constituency of Yorkshire and the Humber European Parliament, which is currently represented by six MEPs.

The Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster is one of only twelve cities in the UK that have a directly elected mayor. Since May 2013, this is Ros Jones of the Labour Party.
