Criticism

Contemporary critics praised Meyer from Berlin:

"The film is, from beginning to end Lubitsch. Not only because he plays the comic heroes and the hilarious plot eventually revolves around his person, but because no one, as he has grasped the meaning and possibilities of film comedy. [ ... ] The tireless, incessant eingesprenkelte joke fails at any point, it allows him to spice up every scene of minor evolution in action. Admittedly may arise much title; but they are so short, poster adhesive, striking, that they - always well rehearsed - just like lightning aufzucken and not only leave her wit, the impression of the interim title. So here, too: and so certainly was the main success of the film Lubitschschem wit and Lubitschscher direction technology. Of course, the action was nice devised and undoubtedly built quite original.
