The doll is a German silent film by Ernst Lubitsch from the year 1919. He is loosely based on an operetta by AE Willner themes by E.T.A. Hoffmann.

Baron de Chanterelle feels near his end. Because he wants to prevent his family die out prematurely, he can proclaim that all the young women of the village to come together, so that his nephew Lancelot aussuche a wife among them. The women of the town are excited whose fiancée less and least of Lancelot, who wants to marry under any circumstances. Before he knows sichs him 40 to marry her ( young) women follow through the whole village. He manages to hide and to ask the way to the next monastery.
In the monastery there is no celibate life: The monks are thick from all the feasting and Lancelot comes to the monastery, as are the monks especially with a heavy meal. It is admitted, however, must make do with a dry piece of bread. Days later - Lancelot is still living in the monastery - the monks because of their lifestyle almost bankrupt. In the newspaper they read an open letter from Chanterelle to Lancelot: He should still go back to his uncle again and get married. As "compensation" he would pay him 300,000 francs. The monks convince to marry Lancelot. If he had wanted to marry any woman, but he could also marry a doll. After some hesitation, Lancelot agrees.
He embarks on Dollmaker Hilary, who has just created a doll in the likeness of his daughter Ossi. In contrast to the daughter the doll cuts, although no grimaces, can seem like a real woman dance and greet for example. While Lancelot of Hilary dozens can show strikingly realistic dolls, dancing Hilary ' impetuous young apprentice with the doll, whose arm is broken in the subsequent fall. Ossi has pity on the boy and offers itself as long as the doll to imitate, until he has repaired the arm. Because Lancelot do not like the pre- led puppets, because he wants to have a character, Hilary shows him the just finished doll has become - in fact, the real Ossi. Spontaneously, Lancelot decides to buy, gets a " doll wedding dress" and the manual as well as good advice for the care of the doll. Baron de Chanterelle feels once again the end approaching and the Erbschleicher already inhabit his house, as Lancelot appears with Ossi and gesundet Chanterelle spontaneously. The wedding is set. Meanwhile, the assistant Hilary confesses that instead of the real doll Ossi is at Lancelot's side. Spontaneous stand Hilary suddenly gray hair on end.
The wedding between Lancelot and Ossi Ossi takes place and plays her role well dolls. Lancelot receives from Chanterelle the promised money and making out with Ossi on the monastery. There the monks want to turn them off in a broom closet, but manages to Ossi to outwit them and to stand in Lancelot's bed-room at the end. The uses them as a clothes rack and dreams at night that Ossi was alive. When he wakes up, he insists Ossi, actually live, but believes it Lancelot until she is frightened before a mouse. Both escape from the monastery and eventually find themselves on a bench, where they happily fall into his arms and kiss her.
Hilary, meanwhile, has tried in vain to reach the monastery. He steals from a balloon seller in all balloons and drifts in the sky, but the journeyman shooting at the balloons that burst gradually. Hilary drops to the ground and lands directly in front of the kissing couple. Before he can be indignant, show him Ossi and Lancelot their marriage certificate: both have once married "real". Hilary is now its worry unmarried and prompt stain his hair black again.
Production
The film was shot in the Ufa - union studios, Tempelhof in Berlin. The world premiere of the film took place on 4 December 1919 at the Ufa - Palast am Zoo in Berlin.
Ernst Lubitsch himself described the film in retrospect as " pure fantasy; Most scenes were only made of cardboard, some even made of paper. To this day, I consider this film one of the most imaginative I've ever made. "
Criticism
