Michael Anderson (director)

Michael Joseph Anderson ( born January 30, 1920 in London ) is a British film director.

Life and career

Michael Anderson initially worked as an actor, then as a production assistant and finally as a director. Until the mid-1950s, his work remained rather insignificant. In 1954, he reached a wider audience with the war drama May 1943 - The destruction of the dams ( The Dam Busters ). He had his international breakthrough in 1956 with in 80 days around the world ( Around the World in Eighty Days ) by Jules Verne. Directed with a huge star cast film was nominated for eight Oscars and won five awards ( including Best Film ) - despite nomination Anderson remained the Oscar for best director working denied.

Other well-known films produced under his direction, were Operation Crossbow ( Operation Crossbow ) with George Peppard and Sophia Loren in 1965, The Shoes of the Fisherman (The Shoes of the Fisherman ) in 1968 with Anthony Quinn, the science fiction film escape to the 23rd century ( Logan 's Run ) with Michael York (1976) and the biopic the young Catherine ( Catherine young, 1991) with Julia Ormond in the title role. His last work was 1999, the German -British- Luxembourg co-production The New Adventures of Pinocchio (The New Adventures of Pinocchio ).

His son, Michael Anderson Jr. is an English actor in film and television.
