Michael Bzdel

Michael ( Mykhailo ) Bzdel C.Ss.R. ( born July 21, 1930 in Wishart, Saskatchewan, † April 3, 2012 in Winnipeg ) was Archeparch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church archeparchy Winnipeg and Metropolitan of Ukrainian Catholics in Canada.

Life

Michael Bzdel visited the Saint Vladimir College in Roblin, Manitoba and joined the religious order of a branch of the Eastern Church of the Redemptorists. After his novitiate in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, he studied from 1948 to 1955 Theology and Philosophy in Waterford and Meadowvale in Ontario. The Apostolic Exarch of Eastern Canada, Isidore Borecky, donated to him on July 7, 1954, the ordination. He was pastor from 1955 to 1967 in Roblin, where he also taught at Saint Vladimir college. He was pastor in Winnipeg ( 1967-71 ), Saskatoon ( 1972-81 ) and Yorkton and Dean ( 1981-84 ). In a sabbatical ( 1971-72 ), he studied pastoral counseling at Saint Paul University in Ottawa. From 1983 to 1992 he was Provincial of the Redemptorist Order in the Province of Yorkton.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 16 December 1992 Archbishop ( Archeparch ) of the Ukrainian Catholic archeparchy Winnipeg (eg: Українська Католицька Архиєпархія Вінніпеґу ) as well as Metropolitan of Ukrainian Catholics in Canada. The Archbishop Emeritus of Winnipeg, Maxim Hermaniuk CSsR, donated to him on 9 March 1993, the episcopal consecration in the Vladimir and Olga Cathedral in Winnipeg; Co-consecrators were Sulyk Stephen, archbishop of Philadelphia, and Myron Michael Daciuk OSBM, Bishop of Edmonton.

Bzdel was as Metropolitan of Canada Member of the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Bishops ( CCCB ). He was active in other committees and commissions, including the Ad Hoc Committee for Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. In 1997 the Holy Father appointed him as a delegate to the Special Synod for the Assembly of Bishops for America.
