Michael Edwardes

Sir Michael Edwardes Owen (born 11 October 1930 in South Africa) is a native of South Africa British former business manager, the CEO of companies such as Chloride Group, Leyland Motors and International Computers Limited was.

Life

After visiting the St. Andrew 's College in Grahamstown Edwardes began in 1947 to study at Rhodes University in the same city. In 1951, he was in Africa. Employees in 1891 and founded the London-based Chloride Group, the UK's largest supplier of uninterruptible power supplies for hospitals and other public buildings In 1966 he took charge of the Chloride Group on his first employment in the UK, as it Commercial Director and later Managing Director of Alkaline Batteries was first, the smallest subsidiary of the Group. He proved to be foresighted manager of the ailing company by naming moderate business objectives and building an enthusiastic management team to achieve these business goals. This meant that he was appointed in 1974 as Chief Executive Officer of the Chloride Group.

1977 Edwardes was asked to renovate the nationalized after massive economic problems in 1975 the engine manufacturer Leyland Motors, which was due to business failures in previous years as almost impossible. As CEO, he managed to rehabilitate through strict business management and enforcement of high expectations, the company, so that there was a supported by the British government under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher re-privatization of the automotive industry within the next five years. He not only reduced the Board from 13 to 7 board members, but did also include a majority of the factories of the company and release the majority of the workforce.

For his services he was made a Knight Bachelor in 1979 and led henceforth the additional name "Sir". His experiences during the renovation of Leyland Motors, he published in the book Back from the Brink (1983).

After leaving Leyland Motors, he became in 1984 Chief Executive Officer of International Computers Limited ( ICL), came from this post, however, already six months later, after the company Standard Telephones and Cables (STC ) was acquired.
