Michael Matthews ( born September 26, 1990 in Canberra) is an Australian track and road racing cyclist.
Career
Michael Matthews in 2006 Australian champion in the road race the junior class. In the 2008 season he won the junior class two stages of the Tre Ciclistica Bresciana, part of the Grand Prix Général Patton and was successful in a stage of the Tour of the Murray River. He also became an Australian vice-champion in the junior team pursuit on the track. The following year he won the silver medal in the individual time trial of the U23 class at the Ozeanienmeisterschaften in Australia.
From September 2009, Matthews drove for the team Jayco - AIS. In November, he was the champion in the time trial and road race in the U23 class win at the Ozeanienmeisterschaften in Invercargill. In 2010 he was U23 world champion in the road race and also won the overall title the UCI Oceania Tour.
In 2011, Matthews joined the Dutch ProTeam Rabobank, in his first year with the team he could win with his victory in the Tour Down Under for the first time a race of the UCI World Tour.
After two years with Rabobank, he signed a contract with the Australian Orica GreenEdge team. In the Vuelta a España in 2013 he won the mass sprint of the fifth stage, reaching its greatest success so far.
Trivia
Because of his penchant for piercings and jewelry Michael Matthews in Australia has received the nickname " Bling ".
