Microstromatales

The Microstromatales are a group of smut fungi ( Ustilaginomycotina ) and like most of smut fungi, plant parasites.

Characteristics and lifestyle

The representatives of this order are compared to the other systems characterized by local interaction zones with the host without interaction apparatus. They do not form teliospores. The basidia grow through the stomata of the hosts into the open and release their spores on the leaf surface. The Microstromatales have simple Septalporen.

System

The Microstromatales among the Exobasidiomycetes. After Begerow et al. (2006) represent the sister taxon of Malasseziales and are subdivided as follows:

  • Microstromataceae Microstroma
  • Rhodotorula bacarum ( Anamorphic )
  • Rhodotorula phylloplana ( Anamorphic )
  • Sympodiomycopsis ( Anamorphic )
  • Quambalaria (possibly Anamorphic )
  • Volvocisporium
