Mikko Innanen (musician)

Mikko Innanen (* 1978 in Lapinjärvi ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( saxophone, clarinet) and composer in the field of Modern Creative and New improvisational music.

Life and work

Innanen began with ten years to play alto saxophone and had first lessons at the music school of Loviisa, where he lived with his family in 1988. In 1994 he moved to Helsinki to study at the Jazz Department of the Sibelius Academy, where he graduated with a Master in 2003. 1998/99 he spent as an exchange student at Rytmisk of Music in Copenhagen. From the 2000s he worked in the Scandinavian jazz and improvisation scene. He had his own band projects ( with Samuli Mikkonen and Seppo cantons and his band Innkvisitio ), but was also in other groups such as PLOP, delirium, Triot involved ( with bassist Nicolai Munch -Hansen and drummer Stefan Pasborg ) and gourmet. Innanen also formed a trio with Joe Fonda and Lou Grassi. He also worked with Han Bennink, Iro Haarla ( Penguin Benguine ), in duo with Mika Kallio and band projects, inter alia, by Kalle Kalima, Pekka Tuppurainen / Magnus Broo and Wade Mikkola.

Alex Henderson looks heavily influenced Innanen both as a composer and as a soloist with Ornette Coleman, but he also processed the atmospheric, dark aspects in the music of John Coltrane.

As best soloist in 2000 he was awarded at the International Competition for Jazz Groups in Spanish Getxo; In 2001 he received the first prize at Jukka Perko Saxophone Contest in Huittinen.
