Millie (singer)

Millie Small, in Germany also easy Millie, ( born October 6, 1942 in Clarendon, Jamaica as Millicent Dolly May Small) is a Jamaican ska and pop singer. Her biggest success was the song My Boy Lollipop, the 5th, reached in 1964 in the German single charts in the UK as in the American charts Place 2.

Career

Millie, the daughter of an overseer of a sugar cane plantation, began her singing career as a teenager and had as a member of various duos with names like Roy and Millie, Owen & Millie and Jackie & Millie a few hits in the Anglophone Caribbean.

1963 Millie went to London and took over the single Do not You Know, which was unsuccessful, however. Their second release in the UK was then a cover version of the song My Boy Lollipop, which was originally recorded in 1956 by Barbie Gaye. Arranged was the inclusion of Ernest Ranglin, and until today, spread the legend that the young Rod Stewart on harmonica playing. In reality, however, played Jimmy Powell of the Rockin ' Berries. The single developed after its publication in March 1964 on both sides of the Atlantic to be a big hit and has sold to a total of around seven million times. My Boy Lollipop was the first hit of the label Iceland Records (even if it was taken from Fontana Records under license) and the first hit of the Jamaican blue beat in Europe at all; this genre is the direct ancestor of today's reggae and ska.

With their follow-up singles Millie Small was unable to repeat the success of My Boy Lollipop.
