Minarets (California)

The Minarets, front of the Minaret Lake

The Minarets (English for minarets ) is a series of jagged peaks in the Ritter Range, a part of the Sierra Nevada in California. Together they form a narrow ridge and are a common feature of the Ansel Adams Wilderness. From the naming of the minarets from the California Geographical Survey in 1868, the following was reported: " South of Mount Ritter rise some great granite peaks, very lofty and seemingly unattainable, which we have called The minarets. "

Seventeen of the minarets were given their own informal names, such as Michael Minaret Minaret Adams, Leonard Minaret and Clyde Minaret. In an attempt to climb the latter, died Walter A. Starr, Jr. in 1933. 's Lawyer and mountain climber was author of Starr's Guide to the John Muir Trail and the High Sierra Region work.

Originally called the surrounding mountain wilderness area Minarets Wilderness. In 1984 it was renamed after the nature photographer Ansel Adams.
