After the construction of Interstate 35 in the 1960s, U.S. overlapped 61 and I-35 from Duluth to Wyoming, south of Minneapolis. In 1991, the section between Wyoming and the Canadian border was abgewidmet. The section north of Duluth was led from then on as Minnesota State Route 61.

The section between Hovland and the Pigeon River was originally further away from the lake inland and dealt Grand Portage. Today's route and the border crossing were built in the early 1960s.

The expressway between Duluth and Two Harbors was created in the 1960s. The original route was then transferred into this area to the affected counties. Both counties lead the road in their area each day as County Road with the original number 61
