MIPS Technologies

MIPS Technologies, Inc. (formerly MIPS Computer Systems ) discloses a developer of the MIPS Architecture. The company was the first commercial provider of RISC CPUs. Meanwhile processor architectures and synthesizable processor cores and development tools (software) are offered. According to information available on the company website, the company is the world's second largest manufacturer of IP cores.

History

MIPS Computer Systems was founded in 1984 by John L. Hennessy, John Moussouris and Edward P. Stritter (including chief architect of the 68000 CPU from Motorola) in Mountain View, California. In November 1989, the company has been associated with Bob Miller as CEO to the stock market (Nasdaq ). In 1992 it was for $ 333 million from Silicon Graphics (SGI ) complete and integrated it as MIPS Group. MIPS Computer Systems thus no longer existed.

In 1998, SGI decided to use the Intel Itanium architecture. The MIPS Group should be brought as a company that provides licenses for the use of intellectual property back on the market under the name of MIPS Technologies, Inc.. The second public offering of the Company was held on 30 June 1998. SGI retained a portion of the shares and sold until almost two years later on 20 June 2000, the last of its shares.

In 2002, the British company Algorithmics Ltd, 2005, the U.S. company First Silicon Solutions and 2007, the Portuguese company Chip Idea was taken.

December 21, 2012 it was announced that Google's Android operating system has been successfully ported to version 4.0 on the MIPS architecture.

In November 2012, MIPS Technologies was acquired by the British company Imagination Technologies. Imagination Technologies is primarily known for its PowerVR technology. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013.
