The Mitchell Freeway is an urban freeway in Perth, in the south west of the Australian state of Western Australia. It connects the Kwinana Freeway and the Stirling Highway in the heart of Perth city with the northern suburb of Joondalup. It is the northern part of the state road 2 (S2 ), which he, together with the Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway.

In the city center of Perth, the speed limit is 80 km / h from the mouth of the Graham Farmer Freeway and the Mounts Bay Road it increases to 100 km / h On the median strip of the city highway, the railway runs by Joondalup. All but two stations are also on the median strip. Along the greater part of the route is also a combined Fuß-/Radweg.

The road was by James Mitchell, a former Prime Minister and Governor of Western Australia, named.

History

The history of the Mitchell Freeway began with the Metropolitan Region Scheme mid -1950s. Originally it was Yanchep Highway (after a suburb of Perth ) are called, since there the road should end. The original route, as it was 1961/1962 announced in the newspapers, ran from today's Karrinyup Road inland to the intersection of Wanneroo Road and Balcatta Road. The section from the Narrows Bridge and Sutherland Street was begun in 1967 and completed in 1973. He was named The Western switch and only acted as a distributor for the traffic from the Narrows Bridge to the city center and north of it.

In the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, various phases of construction were realized. In the 1970s, the freeway was initially extended until Vincent Steet, where the district Leederville was intersected, and then to Hutton Street. 1983/1984 was followed the next extension to Karrinyup Road and then Erindale Road. 1986, the freeway was assembled up to the Hepburn Avenue. The first phase of Reid Highway ( S3) (then North Perimeter Highway) was built at the same time. 1988, the Mitchell Freeway was extended to the Ocean Reef Road.

1991/1992 the median strip has been significantly widened to make room for the rail line to Joondalup, which was built as part of the Northern Suburbs Transit System along the entire length. At that time the carriageways of the freeway between Loftus Street and McDonald Street were right next to each other. Space for a widening just stood on the east side of the street. To make this possible, three new Schienen-/Straßenbrücken in Vincent Road, the Powis Road and Scarborough Beach Road were built. When the road bridge and the road surfaces were finished, the lanes were moved to the south to make room for the railway line. The bridges and some additional work was funded system from the Northern Suburbs Transit project, during the construction of new lanes was paid out of the usual road pot.

After 13 years of absence in mid-2001 a 3 -km section was opened to Hodges Drive.

The date last stage, a 4 -km section to Burns Beach Road exits to Shenton Avenue and an overpass over the Moore Drive was opened on 2 November 2008. In this section there was some discussion as was originally planned to build a protective wall several meters high. Opponents argued that this protective wall was an insult to the eyes and the district would cut up into two parts. The plan was changed and the planned start of construction in May 2006 shifted to 14 December 2006. In September 2008, this section was opened to traffic.

For most of his existence had the Freeway two lanes in each direction, but some areas have been expanded over the years to three to four lanes in each direction to accommodate the growing traffic. The last expansion of this kind on three lanes took place in 1999 between the Karrinyup Road and Hepburn Avenue instead. Further extensions will be inevitable because of the rapid increase in traffic from downtown to the northern suburbs.

Course

The Mitchell Freeway begins at the north end of the Narrows Bridge in Perth as a continuation of the Kwinana Freeway and ends just north of the suburb of Joondalup at the Burns Beach Road in Currambine.

Works in construction or in planning

Extension

The state government has 30 million AU $ for the widening of the Mitchell Freeway heading north from two to three lanes in each lane on the section of the Hepburn Avenue to Hodges Drive in their budget 2011/2012 set. The traffic volume has increased more and more in recent years, so that even the projected 2016 traffic volume of 40,000 vehicles per day was achieved. The resulting traffic jams in rush hours in the afternoon increase the risk of rear-end collisions. The expansion work began in February 2013 and are current plans to end [ deprecated] be completed in 2013. As part of the project, the existing lanes are then also renewed in the summer of 2014. During construction, construction of a bridge overpasses and disruption of train connections are not required.

The highway also be expanded with an additional lane northbound between Perth and Hutton Street. To this end, the capacity of the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel is increased. The project started in February 2013. Completion is expected in December 2013 [ deprecated].

Renewals

There are plans, the freeway continues to extend north to Yanchep and Two Rocks. For the extension to the north free land has been reserved. The State Government has announced the establishment of a public Working Group on the extension of freeways in March 2012. The group worked with the Authority, Main Roads Western Australia together with the examination of measures to reduce traffic congestion, with the emphasis on the next extension of the highway. Several options were considered before the group released a strategic business model in November 2012. The report recommends a phased approach, starting with improvements in some parts between 2013 and 2015 This measure would an extension of the highway to the Hester Avenue to the year 2017Vorlage: . / Follow future in 3 years. By 2021, then would highway-like extended until Alkimos the freeway. Motorway junctions to the streets Neerabup Road and Hester Avenue have been proposed. In December 2012, the State Government announced that the Freeway to Hester Avenue in the years 2014-2015 and 2016Vorlage: is to take place tomorrow / in 3 years at a length of six kilometers: Future / In 2 years - 2017Vorlage. The project also includes the connection points to the streets Burns Beach Road and Neerabup Road.

Expansion of motorway junctions

In October 2012, the State Government has announced the conversion and extension of the motorway junction of the Mitchell Freeway to the Reid Highway. There are additional turning lanes and traffic lights will be installed. The project is a temporary solution to reduce congestion and to the volume of traffic that occurs on the local roads, limit on these roads. The longer-term plan is the Reid Highway highway-like build near the motorway junction, including a second overpass bridge. The motorway-like expansion is planned in the years 2014-2015.
