History

The story of Monacia - d'Aullène is strongly influenced by the tradition of shepherds and closely associated with the place Aullène. Both were ( not identical with today's administrative units of the same name ) at the historic Alta Rocca region.

Monacia was in 1864 by a hamlet of the municipality Aullène by imperial decree an independent municipality. Between 1880 and 1889, the land was divided between Monaccia and Aullène. However, the linkages with the land still exist today in both private property and the land of the communities.

Until the First World War, the population of Aullène migrated with their animals during the winter months from the mountains to the pastures in the coastal region. This was the so-called Hivernage or l' impiaghiera ( hibernation). In the summer they moved back up into the mountains to the so-called l' estive or a muntanera, time as possible before the appearance of mosquitoes as vectors of malaria. Between Monacia - d'Aullène, the summer village, and Aullène is Giannuccio ( Ghjannucciu ), a hamlet just a simple stop in the Cagna Mountains was formerly on the walking tour of the shepherds with their flocks. Therefore, one finds the same families in all three places.

The buildings in the center of Monaccia around the church is still traditionnel and rural houses marked by granite stones. Giannuccio is the starting point for hikers who can begin their ascent to the mountain L' Omu di Cagna here.
