The monastery Maceira Dão (Santa Maria de Maceira Dão, Macenaria ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Freguesia Fornos de Maceira Dão in the District of Viseu in Portugal.

History

The monastery was founded in 1161 by Sueiro Teodoniz Moimenta do Dão and relocated in 1173 after Fornos de Maceira Dão. Dom Afonso Henriques put it under his personal protection. It was accepted as a sister monastery of Alcobaça Monastery in the Cistercian Order in 1188 and was a member of the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. 1560 left Henry I of Portugal to the monastery, the goods of two resolved monasteries. Like all Portuguese Cistercian monasteries also Maceira Dão 1834 was dissolved. The monastic property received on the concelho Mangualde. The monastery is now privately owned.

Buildings and plant

The Mannerist and Baroque architecture with an oval church dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery is classified as a National Monument.
