The monastery Monfero (Santa María de Monfero ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the province of A Coruña in Galicia in Spain. It is in Concello Monfero in the comarca Eume around 22 km north-east of Betanzos.

History

The Monastery, a Benedictine foundation in 1135, joined in 1147 the Cistercian order. Mother monastery monastery Sobrado, which Monfero of filiation primary Clairvaux Abbey belongs. In the 16th century, the monastery of the Castilian Cistercian Congregation has been connected. In the 17th century it was destroyed by lightning and then rebuilt in the Baroque style. 1805, the church was damaged by lightning. Due to the monastery abolition of government Mendizábal the monastery found its end in 1835.

Buildings and plant

The present structure dates mainly from the 17th century. The single-nave church in the form of a Latin cross has a generous Baroque façade with four Halbpilastern, which is characterized by an inlaid pattern of slate. The Baroque main altar dates back to 1666. The church contains four Gothic tombs of de Andrade family. The exam is south (right) of the church. Of the three cloisters of the monastery has only one remains of the Romanesque church.
