Monastery Benavides Monastery Valdediós monastery Monfero

The monastery Sobrado (Santa María de Sobrado ) was a Cistercian monastery and is now a Trappist monastery in the province of A Coruña in Galicia in Spain. It is located in the municipality Sobrado de los Monje ( Sobrado dos Monxes ) 9 km east of Corredoiras and about 46 km southeast from Betanzos to 540 m above sea level.

History

The monastery said to have been founded in the 10th century by the Benedictines. At the beginning of the 12th century, it was abandoned. In 1142, the re- establishment took place as a Cistercian monastery of the primary Clairvaux Abbey. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the monastery flourished and founded the monastery Valdedios in Asturias, a daughter; also monastery Monfero was assumed by his connection to the Cistercian Order Sobrado. After a period of decline, it joined the first abbey in Galicia in 1498 the Castilian Cistercian Congregation. The monumental new monastery church was consecrated in 1708. The majority of the convent has been rebuilt at this time. The monastery abolition of government Mendizábal 1835 brought the end of the monastery, whose buildings were sold and fell into disrepair. In 1954 the reconstruction began by the Trappist monks of the monastery Viaceli in Cóbreces west of Santander, which had already re-established in 1929 Monastery Huerta and in 1966 posted a convent after Sobrado.

Buildings and plant

Today, multi- domed church was built at the end of the 17th century, the Capilla de la Magdalena dates from the 14th century. The sacristy has built Juan de Herrera. The current system has two cloisters. Of the medieval monastery buildings the kitchen and the chapter house have been preserved.
