Monsanto is a Freguesia of Portugal, with an area of ​​132 square kilometers and a population of 828 (as at 30 June 2011). It is one of the twelve historic villages, aldeias Históricas.

Geography

The village lies on a hill north-east of Idanha -a-Nova, which rises up to 758 meters above the sea level. The rock of the mountain is granite, which also includes the now visible historic village is built.

History

The earliest traces of human habitation date back to the early Stone Age. The Romans settled on the foothills. There are also traces of the through train from Visigoths and Arabs. In the 12th century took Alfonso I, called during the Reconquista Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, ownership of the area and donated it in 1165 to the Knights Templar custody, on the condition below and above the former bishopric Idanha to create two new protection castles. It was the headquarters of a separate circuit ( concelho ) between 1174 and the 19th century.
