Monsaraz is a comune ( freguesia ) in the district of Reguengos de Monsaraz in Alentejo in Portugal, with an area of 88.3 km ² and a population of 781 (June 30, 2011). The population density is 8.8 inhabitants per km ². Since 1838 Monsaraz belongs to the district of the same name, 15 km from the town Reguengos de Monsaraz.

History

The colonization of this area at the present-day border with Spain dates back to the Bronze Age. This is proven by several megalithic monuments in the area. Even in Roman times and later the Moors were here on the hill human settlements.

The village of Monsaraz was recaptured in 1167 from the Moorish occupation by the army to the leader Geraldo Geraldes, o Sem Pavor around.
