Montpellier Cathedral

The Montpellier Cathedral ( Cathédrale Saint- Pierre de Montpellier) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the french city of Montpellier and seat of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Montpellier.

The original church belonged to the monastery of Saint -Benoit, which was founded in 1364 by Pope Urban V. It was in 1536, became a cathedral, as the seat of the diocese Maguelone was moved to Montpellier. During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, the building was heavily damaged and rebuilt many times over the following centuries. In the 19th century, 1855-1875, there was a significant increase in size by the architect Henri Antoine Revoil. 1847 Cathedral Basilica was conferred the title of a minor.

The cathedral has several bells, including the largest bell in the Languedoc -Roussillon region with a weight of nearly four tons and a diameter of 170 cm. The organ, the work of French organ builder Jean -François Lépine (1732-1817), was inaugurated in 1778.
