Moonsorrow

Moonsorrow is a pagan metal band from Finland.

History

The band was from Ville and Henri Sorvali (also keyboardist for Finntroll ) founded in 1995. Their idea was to combine Finnish folklore with Metal. The first demo tape was Thorns of Ice. However, half of the recordings disappeared mysteriously, and so the band was once unpublished. In spring 1997, publicly released their debut demo Metsä ( 'forest' ).

At the beginning of 1999, the demo was released Tämä Ikuinen talvi (, This eternal winter ', Plasmatica Records) and at this time rose drummer Marko Tarvonen in the band.

2001 then the debut album of the band, entitled brews uni (, dream of a wolf ' ) contributed about Plasmatica Records. Then Mitja Harvilahti and Markus joined the band and your first live performances were held.

In 2003 appeared with Kivenkantaja the hitherto most successful album of the band on the Finnish label Spinefarm Records, which united symphonic constructed songs with progressive influences. It combines Finnish folklore with symphonic keyboard sounds, hard metal guitars, aggressive screeching vocals and epic choruses.

The progressive approach of Kivenkantaja was continued with the album Verisäkeet ( 2005). The album was characterized by long songs of up to 20 minutes in length. The album Viides Luku - Hävitetty contains two songs of 30 minutes and 26 minutes in length.

In February 2008, the release date for Moonsorrows first EP titled EP Tulimyrsky was placed on 26 April 2008. On 28 February 2008, the shift of the release date was announced and this set for worldwide release on April 30. Exceptions to this were Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where the EP was released on May 9. The mini- album was released on the announced date on Spikefarm Records and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on the German label Drakkar Entertainment world. It was recorded in the Finnish Jive studio in Helsinki and contains five tracks, consisting of two cover versions ( Moonsorrow Covers Metallica and Merciless ), two re-releases of old Moonsorrow demo songs and the theme song Tulimyrsky.

As part of the Paganfest tour in April 2008 at which Moonsorrow performed together with Týr, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum and Eluveitie, it came with respect to a performance in Berlin's trendy club SO36 on 17 April in the run up to accusations of association Berlin Institute for Research and fascism Anti Fascist Action Association ( the sole head of the psychologist Peter Kratz ) and the Antifa, one would Nazi bands can occur at a more leftist venue. The accusation was based on the allegedly deliberate use of the SS rune in the band logo Moonsorrows and on texts that are anti-Semitic. On the part of the bands and the organizer of this accusation was clearly rejected. Moonsorrow first published a statement on its website, later followed a video on the Heri personally expressed by Týr and Moonsorrow Ville.

According to EP Tulimyrsky re-releases of all Moonsorrow albums were put on the market on 30 May 2008 by Drakkar Entertainment.

End of February 2011 appeared the album Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden Maassa.

Style

Music

Moonsorrow play epic metal with various influences, among others, from Norse folklore and call their music as " Epic Pagan Metal " or " Epic Heathen Metal". The epic length of the previous Moonsorrow songs found in the album Viides Luku - Hävitetty with almost two half-hour tracks its peak. The successor publication Tulimyrsky contains in addition to the nearly half-hour title track again relatively short pieces.

Texts

The lyrics of the band are written almost exclusively in Finnish and mainly deal with mythological themes with reference to the Nordic mythology. The song from the album Sankaritarina Voimasta yes Kunniasta example, a direct translation of the Hávamál. In addition, Finnish and Scandinavian traditions, legends and poetry are taken up and as usual for Pagan Metal bands is about fighting and singing liberation from imposed Christianity.

On the EP Tulimyrsky also three songs in the English language are heard, namely a cover of Metallica's song For Whom the Bell Tolls, a remake of the song Hvergelmir their demo CD Metsä and a cover of the song Back to Merciless - North.
