Moosalp

The Moosalp (Walliser German: z'Moos ) is the nightmare of community Toerbel.

It is located on 2,048 m with views of the cathedral, the second-highest Swiss mountain ( 4,545 m), and the imposing Aletschhorn. The Moosalp has developed high because of its location, the tranquility and the mountains become a popular and busy excursion above the Rhône valley. The Moosalp is the beginning of the " Törbeltelli " which extends to the Augstbordhorn and has a difference in altitude of 1000 m.

Vegetation history

Glaciers formed in the last ice age, the area Moosalp to a round hump landscape. After the glaciers retreated about 12 years ago 000 formed in the depressions between the round humps of the gneisses Moore. The region is characterized by a sparse larch and mountain pine, whose structure has been shaped by the free outflow of cattle. Hiking

In summer the hiking area Moosalp Toerbel offers an extensive hiking trails of more than 75 km in length, with high-altitude trails (eg the hamlet Jungu above St. Niklaus ), smaller mountain tours and easy walks to the neighboring villages and beautiful vantage points with views of the valley and an imposing mountain world. Particularly popular viewpoint " subject" is, of which one has a commanding view of the surrounding Valais and Bernese four thousand.

Nature reserve

Some parts of the Moosalp are protected. The reserve covers an area of 1.5 km ² with 11 different mire habitats. There are both high and fens, which are, among others, under national nature conservation.

Alpaufzug / Cow Fighting

The beginning of each summer also takes place of transhumance, in which more than 100 cows brought to the Moosalp. The Alpaufzug is accompanied by the Ringkuhkämpfen and a small folk festival.

Alpine Festival

In the summer takes place every year on the last Sunday of July, the traditional Alpine Festival held, which takes place every year a folkloric parade and up to 5000 attracts visitors.

Winter Offers

Ski resorts

On the Moosalp can be found in winter a snow-sure and varied ski area, which is part of the area Bürchen / Toerbel. A special treat offers snowshoeing. With snowshoes you walk in one hour through a snowy landscape on the lookout "Stand", from where one overlooks the Bernese Alps, the Aletsch glacier and the Bietschhorn, Simplon Mountains and the highest Valais four thousand.

Chapel

The Ticino architect Mario Botta planned together with the parish Toerbel the construction of a chapel on Moosalp that Mother Teresa was to be devoted. The inauguration was planned for 2010, the year would have celebrated her 100th birthday at the Mother Teresa. This project was prevented by the conservation Switzerland. After the Valais cantonal court had dismissed the complaint of the Protected Landscape Switzerland, the Federal Supreme Court corrected this decision and thus denied the parish Toerbel the construction of the chapel.

Approach

The Moosalp is accessible in summer and in winter by car. During the summer, the post bus between Stalden Toerbel - Moosalp and between Visp- Bürchen- Moosalp wrong, and during the winter Stalden Toerbel valley station ski lift ( on Sundays and public holidays until the Moosalp ).
