Moravský Svätý Ján

Moravian Svätý Ján ( German: St. Johann in the March, Hungarian: Morvaszentjános ) is a municipality in the extreme west of Slovakia.

Geography

The city is located 5 km east of the Lower Austrian border, which is formed here by the March ( Morava ). The Czech border, also formed by the Morava is located 12 km north of the town. The Slovak capital Bratislava ( Pressburg ) is located about 50 km south.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1449. In the 16th century Anabaptists settled in the town.

Until 1918, the place was in the Hungarian county of Pressburg and was officially Morvaszentjános and until 1907 only Szentjános on German Sankt Johann on the March. From 1960 to 1992 the town in the anticlerical Czechoslovakia was merely referred to as " Moravian Ján ".

Traffic

The municipality is located on the railway line Břeclav - Kúty and is connected by only 6 km away motorway exit at Kúty to the D2 motorway ( European route E65 ).

On 7 July 2005, the bridge was inaugurated in March to Hohenau, the only road crossing from Slovakia to Austria north of the Danube. Previously there had been since the early 1990s, only a pontoon bridge, which was reserved for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes gross weight. The one-lane bridge was built in March a period of two years and has a length of 132 meters. To allow larger ships to pass, the middle section can be raised by 1.6 meters.
