Mörbylånga Municipality

Mörbylånga is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish Kalmar län Province and the historical province of Öland. The main town of the municipality is Mörbylånga.

Geography

The community makes up the southern part of the Baltic island of Öland. Much of the area is covered by the barren Alvarlandschaft of the Great Alvar, which belongs to the surrounding areas and an unusual flora and fauna to the world cultural heritage of the agricultural landscape Südölands. In Alvar and the surrounding area there are several wetlands. The largest is the Alvarsee Moeckel Mossen. Other wetlands are Bårbykärret, Dröstorpmossen, Frösslundamossen, Kvarnkärret, Södra utmossen, Stormaren, Triberga - Alby- Mosse and Vanserums mossar. While larger rivers missing, but there are some smaller streams such as the Frösslundabäcken and Penåsabäcken.

In the municipality there are only in the northern part with the Mittlandsskogen a larger forest area. Small forests located at the southern tip Ottenbylund and the western Albrunna are lund. With Beijershamn and the nature reserve Ottenby exist in the community also important bird sanctuaries.

Along the west coast to the Kalmar Strait of Länsväg 136 runs north of Borgholm is on the Öland Bridge, the only fixed link to the mainland of Öland.

History

The municipality was created in 1952 through the merger of the borough Mörbylånga Mörbylånga with the community as well as some parishes ( socks ) in the surrounding area. In 1967, the municipality was expanded to include the community Mörbylånga Ottenby and 1974 to Torslunda community.

That the settlement history of Öland to far into the prehistoric period, can be seen in the many legacies of this period. With the castle of Barby, Gråborg TRÄBY borg and borg Triberga are the remains of ancient castles and Fliehburgen on the territory of the municipality. However, the most famous is the reconstructed castle Eketorp. Structures

With the lighthouse Lange Jan is one of the most recognizable structures at the southern tip of the island of Öland. A little north of it runs Karl X Gustaf mur, a wall that separated the southernmost part of the island from the rest of the island. Noteworthy is going back to the Middle Ages former saddle Church Resmo. In Algutsrum in the north of the municipality is located next to the Church of the market of Algutsrum, yet come the wooden stalls of the 18th century.
