Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic
The Mordvinian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( short Mordvinian ASSR, Mordovia, Russian Мордовская Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика ( АССР ) / Mordowskaja ASSR, therefore German also Mordowische ASSR, Mordovia ) was an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic ( RSFSR ), the Soviet Union of 1934 until 1991.
Were the titular Mordvins, Finno- Ugric people a with the two main groups Ersja and Moksha, which also act as separate ethnic groups, but was officially counted always as an ethnic group in the Soviet period.
Location
The 26,200 km ² Mordvinian ASSR was about halfway between Moscow and the Volga River, southwest of the "Volga knee " where the Volga near the Kamamündung from its eastern flow direction turns in the southern.
The northwestern part of the Republic was occupied by the Oka - Don - plane, while the south-east in the area of the Volga plate was ( to 330 m). The area was crossed by Moksha and Sura and their tributaries.
Capital was Saransk.
Population
The population was Mordovia 1989 964 132 (corresponding to 37 inhabitants per km ²). Since establishment of the republic, the population is mostly declined, until now (2009 ) further to 833 031.

The Mordvins made in 1989 only 32.5 % of the population, almost two-thirds were Russians.
History
The Mordvinian ASSR was founded on 20 December 1934. Earlier in the same field since July 16, 1928 Mordwinischer a circle ( Okrug ) exists, the Autonomous into the Mordvinian on January 10, 1930 Area (Autonomous Oblast ) was converted to the region and Middle Volga ( Srednewolschki krai) belonged.
In the period of the disintegration of the Soviet Union Mordovia declared 1991 as well as the other autonomous republics of Soviet Socialist Republic ( SSR Mordvinian ). Since 1993 she has been a republic of Mordovia federal subject of Russia.
