It is the smallest by population community on Flores.

The village is located in the southwest of the island and is connected to the main road R 1-2 with the county town of Lajes and on the R 2-2 with the island 's capital, Santa Cruz.

Mosteiro was founded in 1676. The name ( German: Kloster ) is to go back to a local tradition and striking cliffs that surround the previously mentioned Mosteiros place and also found on the nearby coast ( see also Mosteiros on São Miguel). The village church Igreja da Santissima Trindade dates from 1846. Mosteiro At this time had about 300 inhabitants. The present population lives mainly from agriculture.
