The District ( District Municipality ) Motheo was until 2011 part of the Free State Province in South Africa. Covering an area of 13,997 km ² lived around 800,000 inhabitants ( 2007). The capital was Bloemfontein. The district name is the Sesotho word for foundation.
2011 was part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality of the same name, while Mantsopa the district Thabo Mofutsanyane and Naledi came to Xhariep.
