Motiejus Å umauskas

Motiejus Šumauskas ( born November 2, 1905 in Kaunas, † May 28, 1982 in Vilnius ) was a sowjetlitauischer politician, member of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ) and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR.

Life

In 1924 he joined the Communist Party of Lithuania and later rose to the Chairman of the Communist Trade Union Confederation. On 14 July 1940 he was elected a deputy of the National Assembly ( Liaudies Seimas ) that a week later the accession of Lithuania to the Soviet Union agreed. Later he was contrary to the tradition that in the Baltic States, the Office was dressed by a posted Russians, according to the power struggles in the Kremlin after the death of Joseph Stalin in March 1953 with the support of Lawrenti Beria for a year Second Secretary of the LKP.

On January 16, 1956, he was the successor of Mečislovas Gedvilas as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR. This post he held until April 14, 1967 as he was President of the Parliament as successor by Justas Paleckis Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR and thus de facto. At the same time due to this office, he was deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. On 24 December 1975, he was replaced in that office by Antanas Barkauskas.
