The Motu River is a river in the east of the North Island of New Zealand. He springs from the slopes of Maungahaumi on the south side of the Raukumara Range south of Opotiki. It runs east and cuts through the mountain range, but he receives several tributaries and mündert to the northern Bay of Plenty.

The name of the Māori " Motu " means " cut off " or "isolated", this refers to the upper reaches, mostly uninhabited hills, covered with dense rainforest and steep until today. The river is especially used for adventure tourism such as jet boating and rafting.

A proposal from the mid-20th century to dam the river to generate electricity, was discarded. The Motu River in 1984 was the first body of water that was provided by a National Water Conservation Order under the Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967 under protection.
