The 550 km long Moulouya (also called Wadi al - Muluyah or Mulwija; Arab نهر ملوية, DMG Nahr Mulwīya ) is a North African river in Morocco. It is the largest river on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco.

Geography

The Moulouya rises approximately in the center of Morocco between the two mountain ranges Middle Atlas and High Atlas until it flows about 300 miles east of the Strait of Gibraltar in the western Mediterranean. It separates inside of the Atlas Mountains, the mountain range of the Middle Atlas in the west of the highlands of the bulkhead and the mountain chain of the Tell Atlas to the east.

History

In ancient times it formed under the name Malva Mulucha or the border between the Roman provinces of Mauretania Mauretania Tingitana and Caesariensis. By 1830, he was the limiting current against Algeria; until the Treaty of Tétouan the border was moved to the east. At the time of the Rif Republic (1921 - 1926) the Moulouya formed their eastern boundary, belonging to Morocco Oujda and Saidia cities like were excluded and remained under the Spanish protectorate period under French control.

Nature reserve

The approximately 2,700 -acre estuary of the Moulouya is a designated bird sanctuary, but this is threatened by entry of chemicals from agriculture, industry and households in its continued existence.
