Mount Cook Village

Mount Cook Village is a settlement 12 kilometers south from the summit of Mount Cook, the highest mountain of New Zealand in the Mount Cook National Park. It is located directly at the foot of the Hooker Glacier on the Tasman River. The place was so recorded in the census 2006 210 permanent residents since 1996 and a decline of 69 residents.

The village is tourism center and serves as a base camp for mountaineers. First building on the resort, the hotel was established in 1884 (44 years after the Treaty of Waitangi ) The Hermitage. The companies are there today - the original building was destroyed by a flood in 1913.

Only in the 1950s and 1960s, more hostels and motels were created, which led to an increase in visitor numbers.
