Mount Pirongia

Mount Pirongia is an extinct volcano in the Waikato region in the North Island of New Zealand. It reaches a height of 959 meters and is the highest mountain in the region. The volcano was active in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene.

It is located 22 km west of Te Awamutu and eight kilometers from the small settlement of Pirongia away in a forest reserve. He is already visible from the Tasman Sea, since he is only 25 km away from the coast at Aotea Harbour.

Mount Pirongia Forest Park is popular with hunters from Hamilton for day trips. Several herds of wild goats living on its slopes overgrown with bushes. The park is managed by the office of the Department of Conservation Waikato in Hamilton.
