The Fennica is a Finnish multipurpose icebreakers and the lead ship of the two ships, the Fennica and Nordica of, existing Fennica class. The vessels will be used in the winter as an icebreaker in the Baltic Sea and in the summer as a provider for offshore installations. The hull and the drive are optimized for the icefall, the structures are similar to those of a supplier.

History

The vessels with a length of 116 meters and a width of 26 meters and a draft of 8.4 meters were built at the shipyard in Finland Finn yards for the Finnish Shipping Enterprise ( Finstaship ). The Fennica was put into service in 1993. The keel of the vessel took place on 4 September 1992 on April 21, the launching. The sister ship, the Nordica, followed in 1994. She was laid down on 25 January 1993 in Kiel, the launch took place on 18 June.

Technical Description

The diesel-electric machinery of the vessels achieves an output of 15 megawatts, making a top speed of about 16 knots can be achieved in open water. The bollard pull is given as 230 tons.

In the short four large diesel generators with a total of 21,000 kW are installed to generate electricity. Are powered ships over two pod drives with fixed pitch propellers, the mounted aft under the ship and are independently controllable. Furthermore, the ships have three bow thrusters with controllable pitch propellers.

On board there is room for a total of 77 people. Mans are the ships, depending on the application, with up to 27 people.
