Muni Metro

Muni Metro is the name of a light rail -like public transportation system in San Francisco and runs there next to the S -Bahn -like system Bay Area Rapid Transit ( BART), Caltrain, trolleybus San Francisco, two historic tram lines (Line F Market & wharves and E Embarcadero ), the cable cars and various bus lines.

The Muni Metro emerged from the tram San Francisco and has been further developed through conversions. There are now an underground section and some sections that partially partially exposed to the air on its own rail body in the street space.

Infrastructure

The 115 -kilometer network is served by six lines which all run through a central tunnel. This tunnel has nine stations and consisting of two sections. The first, called the Twin Peaks Tunnel was opened already on 3 February 1918 and is traversed by four of the six lines. He scored at the opening of the longest streetcar tunnel in the world. The second part is the Market Street Subway, a common structure with the BART, which is traversed by all lines. This tunnel was put into operation in 1973 for BART and 1980, a level above the Muni Metro. Another tunnel, called the Central Subway, crossing the Market Street is currently under construction.

Is operated by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency ( SFMTA ).
