Band History

Musical Youth was founded in 1979 in Birmingham. The initiative came from Fred Waite, who was a member of the reggae band The Techniques in the 1960s. He sang in the early days of the group together with his sons, Junior ( born 1967) and Patrick ( * 1968 ) as well as their school friends Michael (* 1969) and Kelvin Grant (born 1971 ), also a pair of brothers. All four boys contributed vocals; Instruments played Kelvin Grant ( guitar ), Junior Waite (drums ) and Patrick Waite ( bass). The quintet has performed in local pubs and released on a small label, the first single Political.

This enabled the group to get a gig in the BBC radio show of John Peel. After this gig the popularity of Musical Youth increased enormously, which brought the band a record deal with MCA Records. At this time, Fred Waite withdrew as lead singer; in its place rose Dennis Seaton (1967 ) in the band. With it, the Single Pass the Dutchie was recorded, which was a disarmed version of Pass the Kouchie, a reggae hit of the Mighty Diamonds. In place of the " Kouchies " ( of a joint ) joined the " Dutchie ", the term of endearment for a Dutch oven. The song became a worldwide success: He became a number 1 hit in the British charts, was number two in Germany and number ten in the U.S.. The single sold more than four million copies and was nominated for a Grammy. Another major success was in the following year Never Gonna Give You Up ( sixth place in the UK); Moreover, the group took with Donna Summer on the title Unconditional Love, who made it to the UK Top 20.

After some not-so- successful recordings finally in 1985 the separation, as Dennis Seaton left the band. The plans for a reunion were abruptly halted when Patrick Waite, the interim drug offenses had been accused, died on 2 March 1993. He had suffered for some time from heart problems.

The Grant brothers remained as musically active as if acting as a soloist Dennis Seaton, who also founded his own band with ' XMY '. In 2003 there was part of a 1980s nostalgia tour to Reunion of Musical Youth. In 2005 occurred only Dennis Seaton and Michael Grant on together under this name.
