Musikalische Exequien

The Musical Exequien SWV 279-281 (Op. 7) are a spiritual piece of music for voices and basso continuo (organ and violone ) of Heinrich Schütz. The work analogous to the Lutheran Deutsche Messe represents a counterpart to the Latin funeral of the Catholic Church

History

Schütz composed his obsequies 1635/36 on the death of his country Mr. Heinrich Posthumus of Reuss. The prince had in his lifetime a collection of Bible verses and lyrics together with which his coffin should be labeled. The same collection of texts handed Henry 's widow after his death on 3 Dezemberjul. / December 13 1635greg. to contactor, which it the basis of the first part of the funeral, the funeral Mass took. In this form, the musical Exequien first performed at the memorial service for Heinrich Posthumus that. Because of his reverence for the prophet Simeon from the New Testament at the funeral, the 4th Februarjul. / February 14 1636greg occurred. After the sermon on the text, "Lord, if I have only you " (Ps 73.25-26 KJV ) contactor closed as the second part of the funeral to the setting up of this text as a motet. At the funeral the coffin in the family vault came the final five-part motet Lord, now lettest thou thy servant go in peace. The Musical Exequien published in 1636 as Schütz's Opus 7 in Dresden in pressure.
