The motor ship Doulos was until 2010 the oldest still -propelled ocean-going passenger ship in the world. It belonged to 2010 of the Christian missionary organization Good Books for All and has been used as a traveling bookstore. Over time she went under the name of Medina, Roma Franca C and Doulos Phos.

History

Medina

The medina was built in 1914 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company for the Mallory Steamship Company in the United States. The steamship was named after a river in Texas, as well as their built in 1914 and 1918 before Devon (England) after collision sunken sister ship, the Neches. She was an Atlantic freighter, which was in 1914 as one of the largest and most modern cargo ships in the U.S. East Coast. During the Second World War she served the U.S. Coast Guard off the Pacific coast.

Romany

The Panamanian organization Naviera San Miguel SA acquired the Medina in 1948, the ship called Roma, and converted it into a passenger ship with cabins for 287 passengers and dormitories for 694 people to more. In the Catholic jubilee year 1949/1950 the Roma undertook four pilgrimages of South America to Europe. Subsequently, it was used as emigrant ship to Australia.

Franca C.

1952 sold Naviera San Miguel Roma to Linea Costa, an Italian company. At this time, the Roma has been converted from a steam ship to a motor vessel and, according to tradition at Costa to name the ships after a family member, renamed Franca C.. With a capacity of over 900 people passengers carried between Italy and Argentina. 1959, the Franca C. was converted into a first-class cruise ship, which ran mainly in the Mediterranean. Later, she was one of the first ships that took cruises to Miami. In 1970 another change of the main drive, a FIAT V18- cylinder for operation with moderate marine diesel oil.

Doulos

In 1977, the Missionary Society of Operation Mobilisation (OM) Franca C. and renamed it to Doulos, after the Greek word for " servant, slave ". As the operator of Good Books for All ( GBA) was founded. Since then, the Doulos is manned by a volunteer crew and visited the bookstore ports around the world. In addition to the Doulos OM operates with the Logos Hope another ship with the same objective. As a predecessor of the Logos Hope in succession two more ships ( Logos and Logos II ) were operated.

In August 1991, an attack was in Zamboanga, Philippines, perpetrated on the Doulos crew members, in which Sofia Sigridsson were from Sweden and Karen Goldsworthy from New Zealand lost their lives and 32 other people injured, some seriously. Responsible for the attack was the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf.

From May to November 1993, the entire electrical system of the Doulos was renovated and converted from direct current to alternating current. This electrical cable and more than a hundred DC motors were replaced over 70 km. To replace the generators, the ship was brought into dry dock and open the hull below the waterline. Through the use of around 170 volunteers and free use of the shipyard facilities and adoption of port charges by the Port Authority of Cape Town remained the conversion costs under 1.5 million U.S. dollars.

Since the Doulos does not meet the mandatory from 2010 SOLAS stringent conditions, more service was set over the year 2009 in question. In order to comply with the rules would have the historic wood fittings ( for example, the bridge is located, with the exception of the steering wheel, which was replaced with a modern drive lever in its original state from 1914 ) are exchanged for fire safety reasons. The financial cost could not be provided by the owner. Since the stringent SOLAS conditions apply only to passenger ships carrying more than 36 passengers, was hoping for a possibility for the further operation by OM by the OM staff on board not as far as passengers, but after the completion of the required training as a ship's crew be classified. This proved to be partly due to the still incurred financial expenses of € 10 million as not financially viable.

The operation of the Doulos was therefore set at 31 December 2009. Even before the "MV Doulos Preservation Campaign " was launched to obtain the Doulos about the year 2010. The goal was the Doulos convert it into a hotel, a tourist center or a museum ship, or to operate as a super luxury yacht on. This was long considered the only way that the Doulos can retain its registered in the Guinness Book of World Records title as " The worlds oldest ocean going motor Passenger Liner". While it was temporarily considered to be scrap the ship in India, and on February 4, 2010, the organization OM the upcoming scrapping of the vessel in India.

Doulos Phos

Ultimately, however, the Doulos succeeded to the Singapore-based BizNaz Resources International Pte Ltd to sell, which wants to use it as a floating tourist attraction in Singapore harbor. To this end, the ship Doulos Phos ( German " Servant of the Light ") was renamed. In September 2013, the ship was renamed again in Doulos.
