Mýrdalur ( Isl " swampy valley ", isl. Mýrdalshreppur ) is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland. On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 465 inhabitants.

Geography

The community, which forms the southern tip of Iceland, bordered to the north by the Mýrdalsjökull. To the west is the municipality Rangárþing eystra, in the east Skaftárhreppur.

History

The municipality was created on 1 January 1984 from the rural communities Dyrhólahreppur and Hvammshreppur.

Places

The largest town of the municipality is Vik í Mýrdal, the famous for its beach southernmost point of the island Iceland.

Traffic

The community is accessible via the Hringvegur. The distance to the capital Reykjavík is by Vik í Mýrdal from about 187 road kilometers.
