Namakkal (Tamil: நாமக்கல் Namakkal [ na ː ː əl mʌk ] ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in the central inland Tamil Nadu, about 300 kilometers southwest of the capital, Chennai. The next largest cities are Salem 50 km north and 32 km south of Karur. Namakkal is the capital of the district of the same name. The population is around 55,000 ( 2011 census ).

Namakkal is below the 65 meter high Namagiri - rock. At the foot of the rock is a temple of the goddess Namagiri Amman, on its summit there is a fortress, said to have been built in the early 17th century by Ramachandra Nayaka, a governor of the Nayaks of Madurai. By Namakkal leads the National Highway 7 which connects the longest highway in India with Varanasi, Kanyakumari. The construction of a railway line from Salem to Namakkal Karur should also be connected to the railway network in the medium term.
