Namakkal district

The district Namakkal (Tamil: நாமக்கல் மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Namakkal.

Geography

The district Namakkal is located in the northern inland areas of Tamil Nadu. Neighboring districts are in the North Salem, Tiruchirappalli in the East, Karur and Erode in the South West.

The area of the district of Namakkal is 3,402 square kilometers. In the west and southwest of the Kaveri River forms the border of the district. While located on the Kaveri areas are flat and fertile, the terrain rises to the north and east toward the mountains on colli - reaching heights of up to 1421 meters.

History

The area of Namakkal was in the course of its history under the rule of changing dynasties. Well in the early 17th century came under the aegis of Ramachandra Nayaka, a governor of the Nayaks of Madurai, a fortress in Namakkal. The fortress was dominated in the aftermath of the Muslim Sultans of Bijapur and Golkonda, the kings of Mysore and the Marathas. The British conquered Namakkal in 1768 in the First Mysore War, the city lost but shortly afterwards to Hyder Ali. The population of the district according to the 2001 census, 97.2 percent almost pure Hindu. Only very small minorities profess Islam (1.8 per cent) or Christianity ( 0.9 percent). 3.4 percent of the inhabitants of the district are Adivasis, mostly members of the Malayali tribe.
