Námestovo District
The Okres Námestovo is an administrative unit in the far north of Slovakia with 59 885 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2011) and an area of 691 km ². It borders on the Okresy Čadca in the West, Dolny Kubin and Tvrdošín in the south and the Polish Malopolska province in the east and north.
The Okres in the traditional region of Orava (German Arwa ) is mostly in mountainous landscape, represented by the Orava Magura in the south and Podbeskydská Highlands and Oravské Beskids ( part of the Beskydy Mountains ) in the north. Around the city Námestovo is the Orava valley kotlina. Main rivers are the Biela Orava the Okres ( White Orava ), from the west and the Polhoranka from the north -flowing. Both open into the Orava dam in the southeast. The highest mountain is the Babia hora (1723 m nm) on the Polish border. Large parts of the Okres are covered by conservation area Horna Orava.
Default traffic progressions through the Okres the state road I/78 in north-south direction and the country road II/520 in west-east direction. There is no railway connection, however, consisted in the years 1918-1971 the Orava Lesná železnica, a forest path in Bosnian gauge (760 mm), which remains are now part of Forest Railway Vychylovka.
Historically, the district is located entirely within the former county Arwa (see also List of historic counties of Hungary ). In the Administrative divisions of Czechoslovakia in the years 1960-1990 he was part of Okres Dolny Kubin, within the Stredoslovenský kraj (Central Slovakian Regional Association ).
